Cairn is an ensemble of galleries and chambers, covered with top soil, that is, in this case the dolmens was as if their skeleton. The dolmens usually consist of “boxes” composed of stone slabs to be joined, sometimes, a long or a short gallery. They were a collective burial chambers, as evidenced by the remains of bones and votive treasures (ceramics, jewelry, axes of polished stone).
4 built about 700 BC, the monument in Barnenez is the construction of the two Cairn. He has, in total, 72 meters in length and 20 to 25 meters wide and includes eleven dolmens represented by separate chambers, each of which extends to the exit gallery, long from 7 to 12 meters. The first Cairn (A) was built about 4 350 BC and the second (B) about 4 100 BC Painting of the Cairn in Barnenez are classical ancient scroll drawings.
In 1963, excavations began. Under a layer of earth had discovered the structure of grey and white stones, were folded on the ground a stone hemisphere of the correct form about 85 m in diameter, surrounded by an outer ring of small, 1.8 to 2.5 m, rude stone pillars-menhirs. Inside “the vault” was filled with boulders. In the midst of them was a narrow corridor with a length of 12m, which led into a small room. New wall-painted Grange patterns of circles and spirals.
The tunnel is oriented to the South-East exactly at the place of sunrise at the winter solstice. Within a few days close to December 21, the rays of the rising Sun penetrate through it into the chamber, and brightly illuminate it. It is a spectacular sight now lasts only 14 minutes a year. New Grange was the temple of the Sun and time. Unlike built much later in Stonehenge it was only one astronomical operation: define the beginning of the year, which its builders were connected with December 21. The priests of new-Grange, apparently, wanted to “help” the Sun in the most “difficult” place his way when it reached the lowest point and had to start the ascent from winter to spring and summer. Dated new-Grange in about 3000 BC
